Virginia Beach Fishing Report, Inshore With Spanish And Hammerhead

08/31/08 - Today we had the Hageny's aboard from Washington D.C. for a half day. The marathon this morning had the roads closed and unfortunately the Hageny's had to walk almost two miles to get to the boat. The forecast was for the weather turning nasty later in the day so we left in the morning. At the start of the trip, the wind was light NE and progressively getting stronger throughout the morning. I would imaginie it got rough in the afternoon. The fishing was not as good as yesterday, but still good. the northeast wind had the water muddied as opposed to the gin clear water yesterday and the fish were on the move today. We started off by the sandbridge pier and it took about two and a half hours to get our limit of spanish. We had some nice spanish and there were some good two pound bluefish mixed in. All in all we probably caught an equal amount of bluefish as spanish mackeral. After catching our limit, we moved out just south of the dump site to catch a shark real quick. Five minutes after lines in, we hooked up. This one broke the wire. Five minutes later, we came tight on one that didnt break the wire and after a 10 minute battle, we took some photos and released a nice four and a half foot hammerhead shark. The Hageny's left with a nice cooler of fillets and vowed they will be back at striper time.
