Hatteras offshore update

Since the bluefins left, we have done several trips and the fishing has been very good typical spring Hatteras fishing. There has been no shortage of blackfin tunas around the 230 and 280 rocks. With nice sized blackfins biting mostly on the kite, but some being caught on the troll and jig as well. most of the trolling bites from the blackfins have been right at the 230 rock first thing in the morning.

There have also been a good number of yellowfins out along the edge as well. Yellowfins have been wolfpacking trolled baits and persistent trolling out between 50 and 150 fathoms will pay off. There havent been many limits of yellowfins, but boats working to catch them all day are typically catching 6 to 10 yellowfins in the 30 to 50 pound range.

Some mahi are beginning to show up as well. Each day is different of course, but the days with calm south winds seem to be better for mahi. Especially for the boats that can get down to the south below the rockpile in the stream. There are lots of flyers around now, the water in the stream is warm and pretty, and its only a matter of time before the dolphin run is in full swing.

We have also been doing a lot of jigging lately. The jigging has been very good and consistent. Lots of action with that. Some days its hard to weed through all the amberjacks and false albacores, but the days when we can get past the trash fish, we have had some excellent catches of king mackerel, some blackfin tuna, citation bluefish, huge sharks, and we even caught an 8# spanish mackerel jigging the other day.

Cobias are still a good ways down the beach but should be to us shortly. We are currently having a custom casting platform built for the bow of Matador specifically for targetting cobias by sightcasting in May.

All in all its shaping up to be a great spring in Hatteras. The fishing is very good and we have had very nice catches every day, and its only going to get better. We still have plenty of charter dates available. Give us a call today at 757-749-6008 to get your day booked.
