Virginia Beach Fishing Report, Summer fishing is in full swing!

Sorry about the lack of reports lately. We have been extremely busy with our summer season. The fishing has not dissappointed either. On the inshore side, spanish mackerel fishing has been some of the best we have seen in some time. This last week we had several trips with limits of spanish mackerel. One trip we caught 102 spanish in just over an hour. And the mackerels are big ones too with most going around two pounds. Also we have been seeing the sharks around bait balls. Most days when we can find the menhaden, the sharks and sometimes cobias are right there with them. Several times over the last couple of weeks we have also found schools of big red drums. When we find this, it is usually short lived but outstanding fishing for a while. One trip last week we had a scholl of drum come upon us while we were shark fishing. With these drums there were countless sharks, plenty of cobias, and of course, some big red drum. With this we caught some blacktips up to 80#. Cobias around 40#, and released several reds in the upper 40" range- ALL on light tackle with jigs! thats some great fishing. Thus far this summer weather has also not been too much of a factor with most days being fairly calm.
We have also been doing a handful of offshore fishing trips.Offshore, we are still seeing some yellowfins just about every day. There are some bailer dolphins and a few gaffers around and most days we have looked for mahi, we have made decent catches of them. But right now we are starting to get into prime time of our season for billfish. August and early to mid september the waters off Virginia Beach have some of the best marlin fishing in the world. Last trip offshore we hooked a #200 blue marlin, a #400 blue marlin, a white marlin, saw another white marlin, caught a 50# tuna, and some mahi. Thats great fishing!The season for that is getting started and it looks like its gonna be a good one!
