Matador Charters Fishing Report

1st virginia cobia of the year

Today we had some of our "regular" customers to and our only mission was to catch a cobia. Everything has been slow starting and the cobia have been a couple weeks behind. These guys are usually the black sheep of cobia fishing and we can normally be catching cobia hand over fist and these guys show up and a cobia wont be caught within 100 miles of us. Today was a different story. We didnt bring Dr. Paul today. He is still cursed with the cobias. We did have his son Seth and family aboard. AND WE PROVED COBIAS DO EXIST IN VIRGINIA BEACH. We started the trip out in front of rudee and immediately saw signs of life. Within minutes we saw a school of big redfish. Hooked a couple but none managed to make it to the boat before the school sounded and we couldnt find them again. Then we saw a couple cobias. Several singles then a triple. We hooked and caught one of the triple, and landed a 25 pound cobia. Threw at the other two a couple times and never got a bite. Altogether in an hour we saw 6 cobias, then cloud cover set in and nothing else could be seen, so we moved into the inlet where we caught a mess of croaker, puppy drum, and flounder. Great day of fishing and congrats to Seth for finally catching one and getting it starrted for us.
