Inshore Fishing With Big Spanish

08/30/08 - Today we had the Shin family from New York aboard for a half day. The day started out kind of slow. We checked a couple of buoys on the way out to the wreck and found nothing but a four foot hammerhead that loved eating live spot. We caught this fish and it was pretty much uneventful. He ate half a live spot then came back and got the other half at the back of the boat. Then we moved out to the tiger wreck. We caught about two dozen sea bass with a cumulative weight of maybe one pound. These things were tiny. We caught a lone triggerfish there before moving inshore and trying to troll. This proved to be the jackpot for the day. We trolled in 12 feet of water in the area a half mile south of the sandbridge pier to a half mile north of the pier and we caught a limit of a really nice class of spanish in no time. Most fish were in the 20'' plus range and we had several that were knocking on citation size. Mixed in were plenty of bluefish and we sent the Shin family back home with an entire cooler full of meat. What turned out as an uneventful morning quickly became a very productive last hour of the trip and it was all smiles for everyone. This year we have really had an incredible season on the spanish mackerels and I have more limits and more quality fish than any time in recent memory.
