Its that time of year. Its gotten cold outside and not much fishing going on. But if you are considering a fishing charter with Matador charters in 2016, now is the time to book while prime fishing dates are still available. 2015 was a great year and we would like to thank all of our customers who fished with us and we hope to see you again in 2016. The last fishing trips we did in 2015 were Chesapeake bay season striped bass trips and that was some really excellent striper fishing. We caught plenty of citation sized fish and our December rockfish season was highlighted by a 61 pound striper caught by Nathan Tehanchuk. Chesapeake Bay striper season is over now and closed January 1, but there is still a potential of catching striped bass in Virginia this winter in the ocean. Atlantic ocean season is open through the winter and the rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay should be migrating out at any time and the big school of migratory striped bass in the ocean that are currently off New Jersey and the Delaware Bay, should be making their way south with each passing cold front. Whether they will make their way into range of Virginia Beach is still anyone’s guess.

Aside from striped bass season in the bay closing January 1, black sea bass season also closed January 1 and will not reopen until May 15. There is plenty of deep dropping still in season off Virginia Beach though and deep drop trips are available year round. Right now deep drop trips can expect to catch blueline tilefish, golden tilefish, wreckfish, snowy grouper, black belly rose fish, and other deep water species. Some chopper bluefish should also be around offshore. Longliners working in the area offshore around norfolk canyon are also reporting very good fishing for bigeye tuna and yellowfin tuna, and overnight fishing trips should yield good numbers of swordfish and mako sharks. There is probably a very good fishery offshore right now, but we do not have any charters or weather to get out there and do an overnight fishing trip. If i had the weather to go though, I think I could put together a group and go make a nice catch out offshore now.

Bluefin Tuna should also arrive anytime. There’s no way to put a finger on it and say exactly when they will arrive off Virginia Beach, but usually the first bluefins show up around valentines day plus or minus a couple days. We will be doing some commercial fishing for bluefin tuna as well as doing some bluefin tuna charters.

That in summary is about all that is going on with saltwater fishing off Virginia Beach right now.

We are currently booking 2016 Virginia beach fishing charters. If you want a prime date like a weekend or around a holiday, book it now. These dates will book early and it is on a first come, first serve basis, so whoever books the charter date first gets the date. We are booking inshore half day charter trips, inshore 3/4 day charter fishing trips, full day inshore charter fishing trips and these trips are great trips for people who are in town and want to just go fishing. Inshore fishing trips catch a multitude of species including bluefish, spanish mackerel, sharks, cobia, red drum, black drum, striped bass, spadefish, flounder, etc. For the more serious angler we are booking offshore fishing trips, overnight fishing trips, and deep drop offshore fishing trips.

Either way if you want to go fishing, give us a call. We have all sorts of trips available and can get your date reserved. many prime dates are already booked, so give us a call and lets go fishing. Thanks, capt. Jake
