Big bluefins are here!

Right now we are keeping Matador in the outer banks at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center for a couple weeks to get in the the giant bluefin tuna bite they have during the spring in North Carolina. Yesterday was the first day we fished and the fishing was great. We started off trolling for a bit and had a bite on the greenstick.

Then we had another bite on a ballyhoo, but both of these fish pulled the hook after a short time. It was really calm out and the bluefins had chopper bluefish in schools on the surface and we decided to fish those for a while. We started by throwing poppers into the school, which was a bad idea.

These fish were not the 200# class we normally see in the spring but were much larger 400-500# bluefins and were not very manageable on the popping gear. It can be done but these things are big fish and better suited for 80# and 130# tackle. So we would catch chopper bluefish and live line them back into the school of bluefish and when the bluefins came to eat, they would find our bait. It worked pretty much instantly and we had some really nice bluefins on the live bait.

This fish was a 90" appx 400 pound bluefin we caught on a live bait yesterday. Right now we are booking charter trips and ready are ready to go! give me a call at 757-749-6008 to get in on this. Thanks capt. Jake
