Matador Charters Fishing Report

EASY limit of yellowfins and jig bluefin

On wednesday we fished a makeup trip. The trip consisted of two groups. We had Andy Bailey and his father from Virginia Beach and we had Jim Eckenrode from Maryland and his friend Rich from Hilton Head SC. The forecast was beautiful for the whole day and we had heard a couple solid reports from the day before. We headed straight for the 100 fathom line at the 450 where we set lines on a blue/green change in 70 degree water. Put a ballyhoo spread out and immediately got hit by a single yellowfin. Put the boat back in gear and got whammed a couple times and as we drifted with the fish we ended up near a hard edge at the 480. Every time we put the boat in gear at the 480 there were yellowfins all over us. We caught the charter a limit and pushed north towards where the Oregon Inlet fleet was whacking away at the bluefins. We put the greenstick out and immediately caught a nice dolphin on a flatline ballyhoo. Put the boat in gear and had some yellowfins on the greenstick. The were just lots of bites out there and it was still early. We finally got up around the 560 and started marking bluefins. We trolled over a couple little patches of them and didnt have a sniff from them so after about ten minutes I turned the boat around and we dropped the jig. We dropped one jig and as it sank it got inhaled. After a 30 minute fight we had a nice 67" bluefin at boatside and on the gaff. The guys were tired and had caught all they could so we turned the boat towards hatteras and got back to the dock early. Really great day of fishing.
