05/20/10 - Today we had Bill Funk aboard. He fished with us on Monday when we had a great day on the cobia and wanted another shot at it. Judging from poor reports, we decided to shift gears and go trolling offshore. We started out down at the 000's in 120 fa on a nice gradual current line with a temp break that went to 78 degrees on the warm side of it with pretty blue water. It was a bit rough but still fantastic fishing for gaffer dolphins. Immediately after dropping lines we had our first bites and caught some nice gaffers. Soon after we had our first billfish of the season- a white marlin, come in and get gone without getting a hook. A few more dolphin later and a small blue marlin comes into the spread. I managed to get a hook in him for a brief second up top, but the fish came up and shook his head and spit the hook. A few more mahi then we see a blue marlin come tailing towards our blue marlin lure we had out but he turned for a brief second and was gone as quickly as he showed. We saw a loggerhead turtle and it had dolphin all around it. We stopped and caught a few around the turtle then as we pulled away we saw a large blue marlin chasing dolphin off our bow and as crazy as it sounds, we caught a mahi with a freshly cut from a billfish on our longrigger seconds later. Even though this thing had come very close to death seconds earlier, it was still ready to eat. We ended up with a very nice catch of gaffers and anytime you see a couple of billfish its a good day.
