Matador Inshore Charter Fishing with Cobias

08/06 - Today we had the Bowser group aboard for a full day inshore. We started off trolling up some bluefish for bait and then we were off to our spot. They wanted some bigger sharks so we went to a spot that I have a little further offshore. The shark fishing was kind of slow. We put out the chum and waited for two hours and did not see a shark. Good things do come to those who wait though and after about two hours of chumming, we had a pack of cobias show up. There were three fish. Two of which were pretty easy to bite and after two long and drawn out battles, a 40 pound and a 45 pound were taking a ride home in the fish box. The third fish in the group was a 70 pound class fish and would not bite anything. It swam and rubbed on the back of the boat for the better part of an hour and would not touch a bait. Finally I got tired of watching it and decided to gaff it the next time it swam close enough. The next time it swam by, I stuck it. Bad idea. As soon as I did this, I realized I screwed up. This fish was not happy about being gaffed and it decided to slap me pretty viciously with its tail several times before rolling off the gaff and jumping out of the back of the boat. I seriously think I saw this fish flick me off as it swam off and left me there beaten and battered. After all this excitement, we went to another spot where we proceeded to catch a whole bunch of sharpnose sharks.
