05/10/09 - On Mother's Day, we had Sunny Kaul and his friends from DC and Michigan aboard for a half day inshore. Sunny has fished with us before and I pre -warned him that the fishing has been great. Sunday morning was no exception. The wind was breezing pretty hard out of the north in the morning, so for the majority of the trip we had it all to ourselves. We started out in the midst of an incredible topwater bite. Every cast would get a bite as soon as the plug hit the water. At times there would be two, three, or four fish fighting over the same bait. One cast we had a group of three fish come up on the bait. Out of the three there were two 42'' fish and a much larger 48-50'' class striper chasing and slapping at the bait. They knocked the bait a couple feet into the air several times and finally at the back of the boat, the three decided to finally try to eat it all at once. When the smoke cleared, the larger fish of the three was hooked up and thrashing on the surface- just ripping drag away on the light spinning rod. All of a sudden, the hook pulls on the larger fish. The plug pops free, and within a millisecond one of the 42'' fish grabs it, hooks up, and after about ten minutes, the fish was caught. Needless to say that Sunny and them caught their limit and released a bunch more. The bite died down a bit after the sun got high in the sky and the tide died off, but it was incredible light tackle topwater striper fishing during the morning.
