Fishing Reports > Virginia Beach Cobia Fishing

09/16 - On wednesday, I was down at the boat getting things tidy and Ben calls me up. He didn't have a charter that day and neither did I. We had a short weather window and we decided to give it a shot. There had been a good spot bite in the inlet and we thought we would try to fill our bait tanks. We caught some spot, but quickly decided it was too pretty to play in the inlet and off we went. For those who dont know Ben (Above Average Sportfishing 757-621-5094), he is the cobia master. All he ever wants to catch is cobia and he is really good at it. When me, Ben, and Paulie pulled out of the inlet, we figured we would go try to catch a jack, but somehow on the way we ended up cobia fishing. We sight casted to plenty of cobias over the next two hours. We saw fifteen or twenty, including one large pack of free swimmers numbering maybe 8 or a dozen. We caught 5, including 3 30-40# fish. I caught a 65# cobia. Ben caught a 70# cobia. We stopped at one of my little spots and caught a dozen or so triggers and were back at the dock in under three hours. It was great fishing. Ben can really see them cobias and he catches the crap out of them too. The last fish we caught yesterday made his 240th cobia of the year to hit the deck of his boat.
